About Maquiladoras

  • WHAT IS A MAQUILADORA?

    The word “Maquiladora” used as place and / or entity, and comes from the Spanish word maquilar meaning to perform a task for another. In Mexico, the word referred to the portion of a grain collected by millers from grinding other farmers’ grains.

     

  • THE HISTORY OF MAQUILADORAS

    México first introduced the Maquiladora program, as we know it today in 1965 under the México Border Industrialization Program. Designed to generate employment, bring foreign investment and to foment industry in the country. This program allowed U.S. companies to assemble their products in México. Later, companies from other countries began to establish maquiladoras plants along the northern border of México.
